Some people affectionately referred to him as the 5 th and the last caliph of Islam. Umar ibn Abdul Aziz was born in 62 AH. His life was spent in the company of learned scholars in Madinah. He remained in power from 86 to 93 AH. He performed Hajj several times as Amir al-Hajj leader of the pilgrimage. Then he was deposed as the governor and was sent to Syria.
There when Waleed presented the idea to put his own son instead of Suleiman ibn Abdul Malik, some agreed but the rest disliked it. Umar was then made the Caliph by the will of his predecessor, Suleiman bin Abdul Malik. He was extremely pious and was not interested in the worldly luxuries. He even abandoned the royal palace and preferred to live at his own home.
After his appointment as caliph he discarded all the luxuries of princely life-servants, slaves, maids, horses, palaces, golden robes and real estates and returned them to Bait Al Maal. The result was that during his short reign of two and half years, people had become so prosperous and contented that one could hardly find a person who would accept alms.
He, alone of the Umayyads, was respected by the later Abassid dynasty and was highly regarded even among the Shias. I am certainly surprised at a person who had all the pleasures of the world at his feet and yet he shut his eyes against them and lived a life of piety and renunciation.
